Letting him eat cake

So this Friday is The big day, MR's first birthday. Baby needs a cake, right? BL and I want to make him his own, it would be nice to know what all goes in to the cake that goes in to our kid and it will be fun to make something for our little mister. My question is, what kind of cake to make? The husband would love to make him a big chocolate cake with chocolate, and chocolate, oh- and chocolate. But I read somewhere that chocolate is definitely not the way to go just yet, which follows along with my own opinion anyways. I am thinking something more like a carrot cake, something with apple or banana maybe? I found a good recipe for a sugar-free cream cheese frosting that I will probably use, I just need to figure out what kind of cake I will be topping. Suggestions?

Carrot cake is a great idea! Plus it's a cool color.

i just did chocolate cupcakes. i think it's my son's only time he's ever eaten chocolate, or really anything super sugary. i used cream cheese frosting, but dyed it blue, you know, just to make him messier:)

Banana cake is a good idea though. Not too sweet, but flavorful and delicious.

My opinion? Cake is cake is cake. All cake is good.

But, I like the banana cake idea. Or the carrot cake. Or an apple spice cake.

Well, crap. See? I told you: all cake is good :)

I went to the trouble of finding an egg white-less recipe and then our doctor said he could eat just about anything at that point. So I was bad and used a funfetti cake mix. We made fudge frosting. It wasn't remotely healthy, and I think he enjoyed his first tastes of true junk food. Since then, we've made him chocolate zucchini cupcakes, which are pretty good. You can't taste the zucchini at all, it just makes them moist.

I have a friend who makes hummingbird cake...it is kind of like carrot cake but uses fruit. (You can google it.) She uses a cream cheese frosting.
It's really, really good! I am not sure that it's healthy... Can cake even be healthy? Good luck and congrats on a year as mom!

Thanks for so many great suggestions! I think we are going with carrot cake...though I must say funfetti is tempting :)

The carrot cake with sugar free icing sounds amazing..can I have the recipe? We don't eat white flour and sugar.

For my daughters first we did cupcakes and then made them into the shape of a butterfly. Maybe you could make carrot cake muffins and make them into the shape of a frog or something. having cupcakes cuts down on the hassle of cutting and passing things out. It also is cheaper since you don't have to worry about paper plates, etc.
